L & R 1st Team Vs Derbyshire Match Report
Erewash Valley GC
August 12th 2024
Result: 6/2 Derbyshire
Sue and her very strong Derbyshire team warmly welcomed us to lovely Erewash Valley GC with bacon rolls and coffee/tea on arrival on a very hot and humid day.
3 pairs went out only to come back in again after 30 minutes due to thunder and lightening being very close but after a 40 minute delay the sky’s cleared and despite a few rumbles of thunder we all went out and had very enjoyable matches played in great spirit. The greens were quick and in good condition despite the heavy downpour.
Erewash is an interesting course with great par 3’s and the ‘quarry holes’ – both par 3’s were a welcome shelter from the heat but no one met my quarry challenge of playing both holes in a total of 5 shots for a bottle of wine..Julia Dunkley and Jacqui Knight came close tho.. another time perhaps!
Unfortunately many of the pairings had a ‘lesson’ on how to come 2nd – myself out in the 5th pairing with Karen Latter played Captain Sue and a lady who parred 13 of the 16 holes we played and was great to watch playing off a 6 handicap! We were actually quite pleased to make it to the 16th. Despite the end result most of the matches were close finishing on the 16th hole
We had an excellent meal afterwards and the atmosphere in the clubhouse was happy and friendly. I am afraid the result of 6/2 to Derbyshire means the ‘Wooden Spoon’ has made its way back to Leicestershire to be fought over again next year.
This was our last match against other counties and we have had mixed results with 2 draws, 1 win and 3 losses.
Many thanks to all the Leicestershire and Rutland ladies that played in this match, 2 more ladies will receive their colours this year after playing in this match, making the total this year 7 with a further 6 ladies only needing one more match to gain their colours.
