Tuesday 11th August was our annual fixture against Derbyshire at Burton on Trent for the dreaded wooden spoon.
Lady President Janet Morris once again came along to support the team and conjured up some sunny weather for us.
Everyone was looking forward to playing at Burton and the picturesque course certainly lived up to our expectations. Like everywhere else, the course was quite dry and many of the greens were not holding which meant lay up shots were bouncing into quite unexpected places.
The match was a very close affair with the Leicestershire pairings winning the first two games, followed by a half and three losses.
Fortunately Leicestershire convincingly won the seventh game and at 3
1/2–3 1/2, everything rested on the last game. The final Leicestershire pairings, although relatively new to county golf, took the game to the 18th hole where they manage a very respectable half.
The final result was a very honourable half and, more importantly, Derbyshire retained the wooden spoon.
